03-22-2008: The torture merchants' not-so-funny game

After I saw the new torture drama Funny Games, I longed to smack its writer-director, Michael Haneke, on the forehead, V-8 style. I suppose he would be delighted by this reaction. He made Funny Games precisely to provoke. (And he made it not once, but twice: The current incarnation is a near shot-for-shot, English language remake of Haneke's German original from 1997.) After I spoke to the actorColin Hanks (Tom's son) about his recent torture thriller Untraceable, I wanted to smack him, too - albeit a bit more gently, because Hanks is an actor in the film, not its originator.

02-01-2008: More than just Tom Hanks’s son

HOLLYWOOD - He's tall and slender with neatly cropped dark hair, a boyish grin, and glasses - just the kind of guy-next-door persona that allows the actor to walk the streets and not always get noticed. Colin Hanks has become a fine actor in his own right.

SANTA MONICA, Calif. -- Colin Hanks' boy-next-door good looks and comic timing recall his famous father Tom, but the younger Hanks has quietly broken through as an actor on his own, almost entirely without dad's help.

01-2008: Sundance Review: The Great Buck Howard is All Heart

The Great Buck Howard centers on Troy Gable (Colin Hanks) a young man, who after a few years of law school is still unsure about what it is that will actually make him happy. He flees law school and takes a job as a road manager for a has-been entertainer called, appropriately, "The Great Buck Howard" (John Malkovich). TGBH is famous for his 61 appearances on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Troy finds himself enchanted by this strange mentalist, and against the urging of his father (Tom Hanks) he continues to work with Buck. A comeback is attempted, with the help of an opinionated publicist (Emily Blunt).
